The American Buffalo, designated as our National Mammal, holds the distinction of being the largest mammal in North America.
These remarkable creatures can reach speeds of up to 35 miles per hour and are also proficient swimmers.
Buffalo primarily consume grasses, weeds, and leafy vegetation, typically foraging for an impressive amount of hours hours each day. I find they graze in the morning and lay down mid morning for nap and cud chewing, then back up for the afternoon and evening, taking shorter naps than the mid morning nap.
The average lifespan of a Buffalo ranges from 15 to 20 years, with some individuals living even longer, up to 30+ years.
Female Buffalo give birth to a single calf after a gestational period of nine months.
Buffalo produces dung/chips and these droppings serve as vital sources of nutrients, including nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, sulfur, and magnesium, which benefit both plants and other animals.
Distinctively, Buffalo possess a complex digestive system featuring four stomachs.
Adult male and female Buffalo both have horns, Females are smaller around and tend to curl, while males are stouter at the base and extend more straight up.
Buffalo exhibit a remarkable density of fur, containing seven times more hair per square inch than cattle. They undergo a seasonal shedding process each spring, and their hair can be utilized in the creation of yarn, felt and ropes, while also serving as nesting material for birds.
